Studying at the International Sports Academy: How the support of #teamISA helped me succeed.

Danial is a recent graduate from our Australian Sports Academy Diploma of Fitness class. He is a national sepak takraw player and competed in the 2015 SEA Games. Before studying with us, Danial graduated with a higher NITEC in Sport Management and also a part-time primary school PE teacher. We wanted to find out more about how he managed to juggle his studies and training. Here’s what he had to say:

What made you want to join the ISA?

I graduated from ITE with a GPA of 3.2 but I was not able to enter polytechnic. I was on the verge of giving up when a few friends told me about the ISA, where I could pursue a diploma and also have an opportunity to pursue a sports science degree in the future.

As a national athlete, how did you manage to cope with studying, training and competing?

ISA has been very flexible and supportive of my sports career. The staff and lecturers at the academy have much experience in competitive sports and understand what I am going through. They make sure I have the time to train and compete while ensuring that I am able to complete my assessments and assignments.

My lecturer has sacrificed his time to help me throughout the course, even putting in extra hours to ensure I understand each and every module. My classmates are also very supportive, and we frequently work together and support each other with our assignments.

Do you feel that the course has helped you perform better at your sport?

Studying at the academy has helped make me more confident. The lecturers are all actively involved in the sports industry, and they are able to show me what some of the good and bad practices a high performance athlete should have. The course also allowed me to have a better understanding of how my body works. I am also able to ensure that I have proper nutrition when I prepare for big games.

What do you intend to do now that you have graduated?

ISA has given me a strong foundation and serves as a great stepping stone for me to pursue my degree and carve out my desired career. I am currently serving my National Service. However, I hope to be able to pursue my degree soon, and thereafter obtain employment in the government sector as an allied educator or sports trainer in the future.
