Studying at the International Sports Academy: Internationally recognized qualifications that prepare you for the industry of tomorrow.

Wayne is a recent graduate from our Australian Sports Academy Diploma of Fitness class. We sat down with him to find out his thoughts about studying at the International Sports Academy and what his plans are for the future.

Prior to joining the Academy, Wayne graduated with a NITEC Certification in Fitness Training. During his spare time, he took an international coaching course from the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) and coached athletics at Queensway Secondary School. Having a strong interest in fitness and wanting to pursue his passion in athletics, he decided to pursue a diploma with us at the International Sports Academy. Here’s what he had to say:

What made you want to join the ISA?

I’ve always had a passion in sports and I wanted to understand the science behind sports in order to optimize my personal performance. I found out that the ISA had a Diploma in Fitness from the Australian Sports Academy, an internationally recognized intuition, and I felt that the course would help me achieve my goals and also provide me options to further my studies.

What were the most memorable experiences at the Academy?

The best part was attending the daily lessons in ISA and just being a part of the class. I was able to learn a lot from my classmates through the discussions and the trading of ideas. I learnt from different people from different sports and different training methodologies, it really helped me expand my knowledge and understanding of sports. My lecturer, Mr. Faizul was really helpful and guided me through my studies and also helped me discover future pathways for myself.

What do you intend to do now that you have graduated?

I will be heading to Perth, Australia to pursue a bachelor’s degree in sports Science in Edith Cowan University. I chose to study there because they are one of the top universities in Sports Science and I was also offered exemptions from some modules, only needing 2 and a half years to graduate instead of the usual 3. I’m hoping to further my education to a Ph.D. and possibly get internships in athletic powerhouse countries like Japan, America or Jamaica, where they have excellent development in athletics and high performance programmes.

Do you feel that the course has prepared you for that? In what way?

The course helped me prepare by teaching me to continuously search for information and be open-minded. I learnt to use the resources available to me read up on the various information and articles in sports performance and fitness.

The Singapore Convention on Health, Fitness and Sports was a great experience for me as I was exposed to the broad aspects of sports and learned about athletic training, something I had never heard of previously. I loved the talk given by Professor Robert Newton about the benefits of sports science and the possibilities it has.

It was also a great networking session for me, getting to know the various people involved in the sports industry. I would recommend ISA’s sports courses to anyone with a passion in sports or anyone who seeks an education in sports.
