From property to physiotherapy, how Vincent got the skills to get there.
Vincent is a recent graduate from our United States Sports Academy International Sports Diploma in Sports and Exercise Science course. Taking some time from his busy schedule, we managed to get the opportunity to speak to him about how studying at the ISA provided him the opportunity to pursue his passion in sports.
Before his life as a student at the academy, he was a property agent that was very active in sports and fitness. Wanting to deepen his knowledge of his passion and with support from his family and friends, he decided to join the ISA. After graduation, he continued his career as a property agent while working as a part-time sports trainer for a physiotherapy clinic. Here is his story:
What made you want to come to ISA to study?
As a fitness enthusiast, many of my friends approached me for advice and tips on training, but I really didn’t know a lot about sports science and whether I was telling them the right things. I took up the course because I wanted to gain the knowledge to make sure I wasn’t saying the wrong things. I have also wanted to study sports and fitness for a long time as it was a passion of mine, but I kept procrastinating. One day, my sister told me about ISA and I decided to find out more. I felt that the class schedule and the chance to get opportunities to do freelance work with the diploma suited me very well.
What was your most memorable experience during the course?
I was given the opportunity to do my mentorship at a physiotherapy clinic. During that time, I was able to really apply what I’ve learnt in class to do the tasks that I was assigned. I even gained an extra set of skills by learning how to do sports massage and help patients at the clinic. I really learnt a lot about sports training and injury prevention during my time there. There was plenty of guidance available at the clinic and I was given opportunities to do massage, taping and use ultrasound.
At the end of my mentorship, I was given a chance to go to Brunei with Geylang FC to participate in a friendly match against DPMM as the team’s sports trainer. It was a very interesting experience to be part of a travelling team in a foreign country.
How has your life been different after graduating from ISA?
I still work part time at the physiotherapy clinic and am still involved in the work there. Through my experience with the team, we have become very comfortable with one another and I even had offers from some other sports organizations. Now I look forward to getting more certifications to help me better myself in the field and hoping to continue my progress.
Any advice you would give for those who want to join ISA?
It is important to have passion and to know what it is you want. ISA is a good platform and provides a strong foundation for you to build confidence. ISA provides good hands-on experiences and allows us to apply the knowledge in practice. The wide variety of modules I was exposed to during the course really helped me achieve what I have today.
